AC/DC - Malcom Young

Malcolm Young- rhythm guitarist, co-songwriter, backing vocalist and founding member of the great Australian rock band AC/DC was born in Scotland on the 6th January 1953. Malcolm is considered the brains behind AC/DC despite his younger brother Angus, with his signature school boy outfit, being the more recognized band member. As well as helping shape the signature AC/DC sound, Malcolm took on a management role behind the scenes- deciding on tour dates and album releases etc.

The Young‘s had a rich music heritage with older brother George playing in popular band The Easybeats (who had a hit single with ‘Friday on My Mind.‘) Malcolm began playing in a cover band called "The Velvet Underground" (not the New York-based band). They covered songs buy T Rex and the Rolling Stones. Malcolm and Angus started AC/DC together in 1973.

The band members relocated to the United Kingdom in 1976 to begin a heavy touring schedule to capitalize on their growing popularity. Their biggest selling album (Back in Black with singer Brian Johnson) actually came after the bands lowest point- when then singer Bon Scott died from alcohol poisoning in 1980.

Malcolm has had to deal with his own demons throughout his career. He skipped the band’s touring schedule in 1988 to battle his own alcoholism (although officially he was staying at home to look after his sick son. During his self-imposed absence, Malcolm’s nephew Stevie toured with the band, until Malcolm had successfully overcome his drinking problem.

Malcolm’s music and guitar playing is strongly influenced by 1950s rock and role, as well as the blues-based rock guitarists around in the 1960s and 1970s. Malcolm Young is widely regarded as one of the worlds leading exponents of rhythm guitar. It is Malcolm‘s guitar playing that has seen AC/DC become highly influential on the rock acts and heavy metal bands of today.

Early on in his career, Malcolm married his wife O‘Linda. They now have two children together- one daughter and one son. Malcolm is currently based in the UK, and spends most of the year there but he generally returns home to Sydney, Australia each Christmas.

Malcolm uses Gretsch guitars, and they now produce a Malcolm Young Signature model based on the original guitar that Malcolm used. They come in a single and dual pick up version. Malcolm also uses Marshall Amplifiers.
