AC/DC - Bon Scott

Bon Scott- lead singer and co-lyricist of Australian hard-rock band AC/DC was born in Scotland on the 9th July 1946. He moved with his family to Melbourne, Australia in 1952. Scott was 6 years old.

After dropping out of school, spending a small time in prison, then working many menial bobs (postman, bartender and truck packer) Scott founded his first band, The Spektors, in 1964. He was the drummer and occasional lead singer. A couple of years later, The Spektors merged with another local band, The Winstons to form The Valentines. The Valentines broke up in 1970 after drug scandals and differences of opinion regarding musical direction.

Following the break-up of The Valentines, Scott moved to Adelaide and joined another band- Fraternity. Fraternity went on hiatus after returning from a UK tour in 1973.

In early 1974, Scott was working as a driver and general hand. It was during this time that he began driving around Malcolm and Angus Young, the founding members of AC/DC. Whilst driving them around, Scott professed an interest in drumming for them. They weren’t looking for a drummer, but they were looking for a new singer. They felt that Dave Evans, their founding singer, was not fitting in with the band.

Scott provided vocals for AC/DC albums High Voltage (February 1975), T.N.T (December 1975), a second album called High Voltage (May 1976), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (November 1976), Let There Be Rock (June 1977) and Powerage (May 1978.) Highway To Hell (July 1979) was Scott’s last album as vocalist, and also the most successful AC/DC album whilst Scott was vocalist.

Scott passed away on February 19th 1980 in what was the lowest point for the band. He had been out for a night of heavy drinking at a London club called Music Machine and was left to sleep off his excess in a car owned by a friend. The official cause of death was ‘acute alcohol poisoning’ and ‘death by misadventure.’ There are rumours persisting that he choked on his own vomit, that he died of his own vomit or that he was killed by exhaust fumes.

Scott’s ashes are interred at the Fremantle Cemetery and the gravesite has been declared a site of heritage y the National Trust of Australia.

As AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, members of the Scott family joined the remaining members up on stage to accept the honour in his place. UK magazine Classic Rock rated Scott as number 1 in the list of " 100 Greatest Front Men" in July 2004. He beat out other superstars such as Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant.
